High Level Overview

We got this brand a 157% organic revenue increase ($24,500) in the last 30 days (for Nov 11-Dec 11 compared to Oct 11-Nov 10, 2025) from a 90% organic traffic increase in the same period – giving them a 10x ROI on SEO.

This case study demonstrates the power of a straightforward, no-BS Shopify SEO strategy combining technical optimization, strategic content creation, and targeted link building.

The 157% revenue increase in just 30 days shows what’s possible when you execute the fundamentals correctly and time your optimizations for seasonal demand.

About the Brand

  • 7-figure Shopify brand that sells clothes and accessories for book lovers
  • Launched in early 2021
  • Most of their revenue comes from Instagram and Facebook
  • Was already doing fairly well organically but wanted to dominate their main product category

I started working with them in late September 2025, and was able to quickly improve rankings for important collection page keywords in time to capitalize on increased demand over Black Friday and for Q4 shopping.

How We Did It

The strategy was straightforward but executed with precision:

  • Completed technical work and initial batch of content in a 2-week sprint (late Sept to early Oct)
  • Then started link building in October (and still going)

Technical SEO

This brand didn’t have any major technical errors besides a few minor issues typical of most Shopify stores by default.

⚠️ Note: Each of these technical items are common and necessary to address for (pretty much) all Shopify stores.

Quick Technical SEO Fixes (Completed in One Day):

  • Noindexed paginated URLs – We only want the main URL for each collection to be indexed, not the ?page=2, ?page=3, etc variations
  • Noindexed product variants – We don’t want these product variant URLs to get indexed; only the root product URL
  • Updated robots.txt to block crawling unnecessary folders/directories – We want to block the crawling of low-value, thin content pages to focus search engine resources on crawling and indexing the pages we really want to rank

Additional Consideration: I also wanted to remove the nested product URLs (e.g., domain.com/collections/collection-name/products/product-name) to clean up sitewide URL structure, but the business owner didn’t want to risk messing with URLs right before Q4.

Content Strategy

This is the backbone of the strategy and drove ~80-90% of the growth from updating existing collections and publishing new ones.

Keyword Research

  • Keyword research for existing collections to find all keywords they should target
  • Leveraged GSC data to find and group keywords
  • Keyword research to identify new collections we should create based on their product selection

Current rankings for high-volume commercial keywords:

Publishing New Collections

Starting out, they only had 1 collection for their main product category (that they wanted to dominate).

  • I identified 18 variations for new collections to expand this category
    • By model, features, styles, and colors
  • Also created 1 additional collection in another category based on competitor research

New Content Summary: Created 19 new collections, though later consolidated 6 of the new collections into their main existing collection since those ones weren’t ranking.

Rankings of newly published collections after 2 months:

Updating Existing Collections

Updated each of their 16 existing collections with unique content & internal links following my usual collection page optimization framework.

What I Added to Each Collection:

  • Unique content to each collection
  • H2/H3 headings and 200-400 words of optimized content
  • Added internal links (5 per page to other collections)

Rankings for many high-volume existing keywords jumped from page 2 or not even in the top 100 to page 1-2.

Success Story Example:

One existing collection (a catch-all accessories page) wasn’t targeting any keywords and getting basically zero traffic. I saw a competitor getting traffic for a collection showing similar products and optimized the page for those keywords.

Results: Rankings shot up to page 1 in 3 days and it is now ranking #1 for the main keyword and driving 10+ organic visitors/day.

Consolidating Overlapping Collections

Unpublished and redirected a couple of overlapping categories (one of which was discontinued).

  • They had separate /sweaters, /sweatshirts, and /book-lover-sweatshirts collections
  • Combined all into the main /sweatshirts collection that was ranking the best
  • Re-optimized it to target all of those keywords as well as hoodies (since top competitor was ranking both sweatshirts and hoodies on same page)

Link Building

  • Site started as DR13
  • Top competitors are DR31 and DR38 with 4-5x the organic traffic
  • Currently DR20 after 2 months (even after the Ahrefs DR algorithm update in late Sept)

💡 This is a fairly low competition niche overall and they shouldn’t need many links to their main pages to see a significant positive impact.

Breakdown of the Links Built

Building 5-8 links per month starting in October 2025:

  • 2 homepage links per month (since they don’t have a ton of homepage links)
  • Rest split across top collections
    • Building 1-2 links to collections already ranking well (for defense)
    • Building 1-2 links to new collections to boost rankings (for offense)

💡 Their highest traffic page (main collection) had ZERO backlinks so it is worth investing in a few links to help keep it there.

Link Building Details:

  • Mix of keyword-rich (Target) and Branded anchors
  • Mix of guest posts and link insertions
  • From a mix of relevant and powerful sites with organic traffic

Plan Moving Forward

The strategy continues with these key focus areas:

  • Keep building strategic links to boost rankings (currently 8 per month)
  • Keep an eye on collection page rankings and update/re-optimize where necessary
